The evening before closing the replica solitary cell exhibit, PJI hosted an event featuring several short excerpts from the extraordinary documentary film, “RIKERS: AN AMERICAN JAIL,” produced and commissioned by journalist Bill Moyers.
The event panel discussion afterwards included Paul Prestia (the renowned criminal defense and civil rights attorney who represented Kalief Browder after his tragic experience on Rikers Island), Johnny Perez (Director of the U.S. Prisons Program at the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, and himself a survivor of Rikers), Lashonia Thompson (program analyst at the DC Corrections Information Council and founding member of The W.I.R.E.), and Hilary Shelton (Director of the Washington Bureau and Senior Vice President for Advocacy and Policy at the NAACP).
