David Dagan and Steven Teles visited to explain how the conservative movement developed a robust campaign to reduce the American over-reliance on incarceration, and assessed the reformers’ prospects under a new president who represents an older style of law-and-order politics.

Steven Teles is associate professor of political science at Johns Hopkins University and author of The Rise of the Conservative Legal Movement: The Battle for Control of the Law (2008). David Dagan is a PhD candidate in political science at Johns Hopkins. They are co-authors of Prison Break:  Why Conservatives Turned Against Mass Incarceration (2016). In their talk, they updated the findings and analysis from their important 2016 book, Prison Break:  Why Conservatives Turned Against Mass Incarceration, to include a discussion of the potential for criminal justice reform in the new Trump era.
